Things You Don’t Forget About Pears

April 4, 2016

April has come and with it autumn in New Zealand. Our little yard is full of fruit trees…we have several types of plums, a lemon tree, feijoa bush and a pear tree. The pears are a really hard “cooking” variety of pear and in the past we haven’t done anything with them. This year, my husband suggested I pick them and make something with them. I wasn’t very excited about that idea…simply because these pears don’t look very pretty, but…

Mary Etta’s Cooking School

March 28, 2016

Tonight my youngest daughter, Adelaide, helped me bake some applesauce muffins for her Papa. He had asked if I might make him some muffins to take to work in the morning. Our all-time favorite type of muffin is Dried Cranberry Orange Cheesecake Muffins, but I didn’t have all the ingredients on hand, so I decided to try something different. I found a recipe for “Apple Sauce Cake” from Great Grandma Mary Etta’s cookbook that I knew would be easy to…

Anniversary Cake

March 28, 2016

In my last post, I shared Great Grandma Mary Etta’s diary entries from her wedding anniversary dates of August 10, 1934 & 1936. Her entry from 1935 involved some baking…she recorded that she baked a huckleberry pie. I don’t believe I’ve ever had a huckleberry pie and there is no recipe in her cookbook for this. I did search a little online and it was interesting to read some of these details… “Evidence has been found the the huckleberry actually…

Fascinating Ordinary Life

March 18, 2016

I’ve had a couple thoughts occur to me of late that I wanted to share… Firstly, if you ever had on your “bucket list” the goal of writing a great mystery novel, all you have to do is keep a daily journal (such as my Great Grandma Mary Etta did) for a few years of your life. Record just the simple things of your daily life…the who, what, when, where. After you have died, a number of years later (say…

Celebrations Past and Present

March 11, 2016

Nine years ago today, March 11, 2007, I became Mrs. van Klaveren. I went from having a maiden name with only 4 letters (Falk), to having a new surname with 11 letters. At least the spelling is such that it is in 2 parts and my hand gets a momentary break when writing it! Growing up as a Falk, I always felt proud of my family name. Maybe that is why it has been easy for me to feel proud…

Otis

February 4, 2016

It is often said that a man is defined by his work. This is still true in the case of my Great Grandpa Frederick E. Bone. Today I was at one of our largest malls here in Auckland, New Zealand…Sylvia Park, doing some shopping and having a “girls’ day out” with my youngest daughter (while her two older sisters were in school). As we were heading to the outdoor playground, we walked past one of the escalators and this is…

The Little Things

January 29, 2016

The more you get to know someone, the more you notice the little things about them…the trivia that make them unique. These details are like the little facets on the gems of their personality. When sparkling they catch your eye, you admire them – (or if you don’t, at least you find them interesting enough to notice and remember). And you “compare and contrast” those little details to traits of others you have met, or to your own self. And…
